Cecelia was playing the song, pounding on the piano until her fingers hurt. She thought if she just kept playing louder and louder the days would keep on in their sameness and the men in the gray suits would not come this time.
Grandmother had told her once that the song had words, and had sung them for her. There was something about a stone, and something about the melting of ice. Cecelia wasn't certain what they meant, or how anyone had taught them to Grandmother.
The song, without its words, made her think of lying down on the grass and feeling it beneath her back as she looked up into the sky.

She followed him into the forest a few times while he was gathering herbs, asking him their names and purposes. Her people had fewer plants to work with, living near the desert, but she knew some medicines from traders. Occasionally she would help him when a stem or branch was too difficult to break with one hand. This companionship was refreshing to him, and he did not think at first that it skirted too close to wrongness. &
